Sports Physical Versus Other Types of Child Exams

Atlanta Pediatric Partners will explain if your child may require additional exams beyond routine annual Well Check/Physical Exam. Below is more information about the different types of exams that may need to be performed:

Sports Physical: This physical exam ensures your child can play school sports or attend a recreation camp as safely as possible. A sports physical is more in-depth than a school physical or annual Well Visit and should be conducted preferably six weeks before your child needs it to start practice/participation. This will allow time for additional testing, referrals or treatment of acute conditions.

During a sports physical, the doctor can ask many questions about the individual’s medical history and take vitals before and after exercise and do a physical exam from head to toe. The doctor will also screen for the following:

  • Alcohol/tobacco/drug use
  • Allergies/asthma
  • Fitness level
  • Fainting history
  • Eating habits/weight
  • Immunizations
  • Medications taken
  • Menstruation history
  • Mental health history
  • Surgeries/fractures/concussions
  • Access vision/hearing/nose/throat
  • Access muscular/skeletal systems
  • Access abdomen
  • Listen to heart/lungs
  • Document height/weight
  • Blood pressure/heart rate

Physical Exam: This examination is done yearly and evaluates the child’s general health.

School Physical: This physical is required by many school districts and some post-secondary education institutions to ensure that your child is physically in good health. This physical is typically done annually before the new school year.
